Wong said more than 1,000 students have benefited from expanded advanced Chinese courses this year, with about one quarter of Secondary 1 students enrolled. He cited examples of Straits Times reporter Alyssa Woo improving language fluency by immersing herself in Chinese entertainment, from TV dramas such as Pursuit of Jade to songs by Pop icon Jay Chou. “Watching dramas and listening to songs can really help with learning Chinese,” Wong said, encouraging people to find enjoyable ways to practice the language. He added that dialects remain a cultural bond, recalling watching the Teochew version of the film Dear You. Singapore and China’s national libraries will co-host an exhibition on the Four Great Classical Novels later this year. Wong stressed that Chinese has become a common language among Singapore’s Chinese community and should continue to serve as a bridge to Chinese-speaking communities worldwide.
